What do you do when having a bad hair day? Tie a pony? Cover your hair with a head band?... and hope that no one notices your greasy strands?
Well…the top-knot is one of our favorite go-to hairstyles when having a good or a bad hair day and to be honest we think it one hairdo that will never go out of style. The best part about this style is that once you master the method it’s extremely easy to do and works great with second (or even third) day hair. Plus, unlike a regular ponytail, it gives a really polished look.

The biggest misconception about this look is that you need long hair or really thick hair to do a great top-knot. But let us let you in on a little secret – the trick to rocking this no matter the texture of your hair is to back comb or tease your hair for extra volume and a slightly messy look.
When it comes to creating a top-knot, ‘strategic’ placement is important — it should sit flat on the top of the head, and not too far back on the head. Also when you’re going for a messy look, the hair in the back need not be completely smooth and every part of the hairline doesn’t need to be brushed straight upward.
HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT MESSY HIGH BUN

Scrunch your messy hair with some styling mouse to give your bun a good hold. If you have stubbornly straight hair, backcomb sections of your hair to create volume and fluffiness.
Pull all of your hair upward, making sure the back is tight. Secure with a hair band closest to your hair color in one round. Alternatively, you can flip your head over and put your hair in a messy high ponytail at the top of your head and secure.
On the second round of tightening the bun with the band, pull the ponytail in an upward then downward position, just a little, to loosen.
Loosely wrap ponytail hair around hair tie and secure pieces with bobby pins and U shaped hair forks. Swirl bobby pins also provide great hold.
Loosen random pieces in front, at sides, back and on top to create the messy look if not created already
Finally, secure the look with styling spray. Voila!!
The messy top-knot is also super chic and a great option when wearing an outfit with shoulder or neck detail.

Try to use some of your time this weekend to practice! It may take some a while to master, but we promise the effort is worth it. Oh, and if you do give this method a shot, we would love to see you post your photos on Instagram! Make sure to use the hashtag #bbtopknot so we can check them out.
Happy Weekend
